End of Season
Each year, April rolls around and with it ski season comes to an end in Michigan. We put away our ski gear and address all of the things around the house that have gone neglected over the past 4 months. You know, the operating out of piles of clean clothes instead of from drawers and hangers; the dust webs that have accumulated in the corners; and the things that have unfortunately broken but weren’t that important to fix at the time. After we spend the next few weeks working to get these things addressed…we find ourselves looking back and saying, “I wish we could go skiing.” So, what do we do during those months until the next snowfall.
Well, as you’ll find with most ski families, skiing is just one of the activities that we do. We do anything from volleyball to baseball to gymnastics to football to … Well, you get the idea, we are busy people. Because as we stated, the ski season is short and we find ourselves needing to stay active, to stay fit so that we can ski faster, harder, steeper… In fact, sometimes you will see some of us in the metroparks with our rollerblades on, ski poles in hand, and running cones. This is also a time for us to learn some of life’s other skills, like ride a bike or swim or just simply read a book.
However, in the fall, we start thinking about skiing as the weather starts to cool, the evening nights become crisp, and the leaves start to turn. We look forward to meeting back up with our ski friends and family. We meet up to talk about the prior year and plan for the next. We dig out the gear. We get the skis tuned. We get the items that we need for another season. We also start training. Training the muscles and movements that we need to use for skiing. Box jumps, slack lines, shuttle runs, agility movements, yoga, etc. are our tools of improvement. We prepare mentally and physically for the days ahead to have a start on the season by being ready for when that first snow falls and we can put on those skis again…heading up the chair lift not as the Last Chair but as the First Chair to another ski season…
